Lucas and TV

One parenting decision that I'm proud of is how we've really limited the amount of TV Lucas watches. Mike and I agree that we'd rather he be outside running around, reading books, or playing instead of sitting in front of the TV spacing out. I don't have anything against TV, in fact there are probably a few too many reality shows I enjoy watching. But I do feel it is best in small doses.

Lucas probably watches TV every other day and even then he only watches 30 minutes max. He doesn't know anything about the Sprout channel. The only time he watches TV it's from an On Demand show. I like how it is commercial free (that child does not need any advertisers telling him things he needs to have purchased for him) and there's a time limit on it. TV definitely serves its purpose though. Sometimes when we are solo parenting and we need to put Evan down for a nap or cook dinner TV comes in handy.

A few weeks ago we had some friends over with older children. They saw a DVD we had for Cars 2. Lucas got that DVD for Christmas but we hadn't watched it yet. Lucas loves the Cars but he has only ever seen them in books or in his toys. The older kids asked if we could put the DVD in and we did. The look on Lucas' face was hilarious as he realized that Lightning McQueen was also on TV!

But I have to say I'm happy that my boy loves to read. He loves to play outside. He loves to be active. I like how he has no idea what Sesame Street is. I hope as he gets older TV (and other electronics) will remain a novelty and not a constant necessity in his life.
